Prof. Dr. Mehmet Bozkurt MD, PhD

About us

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Bozkurt, MD, PhD, was born in Istanbul on October 26, 1969. He went to primary school at P.S. 20 in Queens, New York, and at Kazım Tunç Primary School in Maltepe, Istanbul, and to high school at Moda High School. He started medical school at Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GATA) in 1986 and graduated with honors in 1992; in 1992 and 1993 he passed the ECFMG and USMLE exams. In 1992 he was an orthopedics observer at the König-Ludwig-Haus clinic in Würzburg, Germany. From 1993 to 1995 he served as chief military doctor of the 2nd Commando Brigade infirmary in Bolu.

He completed his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at GATA from 1995 to 2001; during his specialty training he worked as a volunteer at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn and at The Glasgold Group hospitals in New Jersey, USA. He then worked as a plastic surgeon at Diyarbakır Military Hospital (2001–2003) and Kyrenia Military Hospital (2003–2004).

From 2005 to 2013 he was an assistant professor in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Burn Unit at Dicle University, where he performed reconstructive surgery for congenital deformities and traffic-accident injuries and founded the Dicle University Burn Center in Diyarbakır, with 24 beds, including 8 intensive care beds. He passed the relevant professorship examination in 2010 and, the same year, received the European Board of Plastic Surgery and Turkish Plastic Surgery Society certifications.

At Cleveland Clinic in the USA he was a research fellow in microsurgery and plastic surgery from 2006 to 2007, working with Dr. Maria Siemionow on composite tissue allotransplantation, and completed a clinical fellowship in microsurgery from 2011 to 2012 under Dr. Risal Djohan, working with Dr. James Zins and Dr. Frank Papay.

In Istanbul he headed plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery at Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital (2012–2013) and at the University of Health Sciences’ Bağcılar and Kartal Dr. Lütfi Kırdar Training and Research Hospitals (2013–2020), where he founded the burn center at Bağcılar and served as chief physician of both hospitals. From 2016 to 2020 he was head of the Department of Plastic Surgery and a faculty member at the University of Health Sciences. In 2017, he received the title of Professor.

In 2018 he began a PhD in tissue engineering at the University of Health Sciences Hamidiye Institute of Health Sciences; the same year he also became a founding member of the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Health Sciences. In 2021 he founded MT Clinic in Nişantaşı, Istanbul, where he sees patients. As chairman of the board of Kherion Biotechnology and Health Technologies R&D Inc., which he founded in 2023, he continues research and development in cellular therapies and tissue engineering. In 2024 he received the American Board of Regenerative Medicine certification; as a member of the board and its Türkiye representative, he organizes courses and training.

He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Science (IFATS), the International Burn Society, the Turkish Plastic Surgery Society and the Turkish Aesthetic Surgery Society. He has 120+ publications, with 2,180+ citations and an h-index of 25. Dr. Bozkurt, who reviews for many international and national journals, has given oral presentations and chaired sessions at numerous scientific congresses and meetings; he frequently speaks to the press on stem cell applications and burn reconstruction. He is married and has two children.
